March 10, Houston, TX: Logical Square, a developer of novel, clinically substantiated nutraceutical ingredients, has launched CaFi (Cassia fistula) for the gut health market as a direct competitor to senna-based products.

The biggest difference between CaFi and Cassia angustafolia — the traditional source for the majority of senna-based products — is that its sennoside content is low, making it safer for long-term use. Additionally, CaFi works better and faster, and is useful in other areas such as skin and liver care.

A comparison study featuring CaFi and senna (Cassia angustafolia) was recently completed. This randomized controlled clinical trial included more than 60 healthy participants experiencing irregular bowel habits who consumed CaFi or senna over a three-week period.
According to the findings, CaFi (Cassia fistula extract) was as effective as senna (Cassia angustifolia) in helping to increase the frequency of bowel movements and softening of stool. The study also showed that straining during defecation was significantly reduced with CaFi as compared to senna. CaFi also worked faster vs. senna, while associated symptoms like headache, bloating, and gaseous distension were also relieved.

Furthermore, participants in the CaFi group did not experience side effects like gripping, pain in abdomen, and exhaustion after defecation — all of which were observed in the senna group and are the reasons why senna is currently not suitable for children and geriatric populations.
Another notable advantage of CaFi vs. senna is its palatable sweet taste and consistency, which enhance user compliance, especially in formulations designed for children and geriatric populations. The extract is also suitable in various dosage forms like powders, syrups, tablets, capsules, gummies, and bars, making it easily consumable and accessible for those who may have difficulties with senna.

“We believe we have a truly relevant, unique product for the gut health market, one that will impact the lives of millions who suffer from digestive issues,” said Sanjay Tamoli, PhD, Technical Partner, Logical Square. “Senna is a well-established gut health ingredient but current offerings come with side effects that turn people off from its use. Our product builds on senna’s history of use but is a better, healthier version that will be a game changer for people who want a product that works but not at the expense of their quality of life.”
